National Laboratory for Civil Engineering (LNEC)

As an independent and impartial R&D institute, LNEC's priority is to make Science, as to contribute to the creation, development and dissemination of applied research in areas related to civil engineering, such as:Public works: dams, harbours, airfields, roads and railways infrastructures;buildings;housing and urban planning;water resources, coastline and environment;transport;materials, components and other products for Industry.LNEC activity essentially aims to the following objectives:The quality, the safety and the economy of works;the safety of persons and assets;the protection and rehabilitation of the natural and built heritage;the technological modernisation and innovation.Types of activityThe main activities of LNEC are the following:Research and Innovation of a strategic nature, developed within research lines considered as priority due to their relevance at national and international level.Studies and consultancy, by providing advanced expert technical and advisory services, to public and private bodies, both national and foreign.Promote quality in construction through the preparation of specifications, standards and regulations, the approval and classification of new building materials and components, monitoring of works, certification of building projects under LNEC’s "Quality Mark" and testing. In addition to the activities described above, LNEC develops knowledge dissemination actions and scientific and technical training, through the edition of scientific and technical documents, conducting specialized courses or other advanced training actions, organisation of scientific and technical meetings, both national and foreign, complemented by the publishing activity and the Library. The Cooperation activities with various technical and scientific entities, domestic and foreign, in particular with scientific and technical associations, universities and laboratories, is assumed as an important action to the valorisation of the technical and scientific activities developed by LNEC.
Hydraulics and Environment Department (DHA)
DHA develops research in the whole water cycle focused on 5 strategic lines: risk management and safety, hydraulic infrastructures; environment and aquatic systems; urban water; and information technology applied to water and environment. Through its scientific activity, DHA supports the creation and implementation of public policies in the water domain and promotes the transfer of scientific knowledge to the society, intertwining science and engineering for the solution of societal problems. DHA also holds state-of-the-art capacity on high accuracy, high performance numerical modeling, and unique experimental facilities for physical modeling of ports, dams and other hydraulic structures.DHA is organized in 5 research units:Urban Water UnitEstuaries and Coastal Zones UnitPorts and Maritime Structures UnitWater Resources and Hydraulic Structures UnitInformation Technology in Water and Environment Research Group
