National Institute of Agronomic Research of Tunisia (INRAT)

The National Institute of Agronomic Research of Tunisia (INRAT) is a public institution depending on the Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. It is the largest instituted of the national scientific research system and created since 1913. INRAT has greatly contributed to the modernization of the agricultural sector and agro-systems, and conducts research in almost all agricultural domains and it is organized in seven laboratories. The latter are interested to field crops, Plant and crop protection, animal and forage productions, horticulture, biotechnology applied to agriculture, agronomy and agricultural economics.
Among its activities, INRAT is mainly concerned with, collect and study of genetic resources that may be of interest for the country, create crop varieties and improve animal breeds adapted to environmental conditions, study and management of pathogens and insects of major crops, etc.
INRAT has many collaborative research projects at national, bilateral, regional and international level. At national level, different projects are carried with universities and higher education institutions, institutions of development and extension, professional groupings and farmer organizations, NGO’s, etc. Also, at bilateral, regional and international level, many projects are carried (Maghreb region, Mediterranean countries, FAO, PNUD, IAEA, AOAD, ACSAD, CGIAR, Centers as CIHEAM, ICARDA, CIMMYT, etc.
In order to be responsive to different agricultural environments, INRAT has an extensive capacity for field experiments. It is also noted that regional research activities are carried in different regional experimental stations located in the major agriculture agro-climatic zones. The research stations activities are in relation to laboratory activities.
